About Dr John Ferguson

Dental Surgeon in Melbourne — Dr John Ferguson

Dr Ferguson is a specialist dental surgeon in Melbourne and his private practice is in Box Hill. He also consults at branch practices in Bulleen.

Professional Career

Dr Ferguson completed the degrees of Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Master of Dental Surgery (with Distinction) at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. He followed this by obtaining Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He subsequently completed a PhD while working as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago.

Following his move to Australia in the 1990s, he conducted a private practice in Cairns, North Queensland, while also working as a visiting consultant to Cairns Base Hospital. In 1999 he accepted the position of Professor/Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; a joint appointment between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Dental Hospital as a specialist dental surgeon in Melbourne. At the same time, he was appointed as Head of Unit at Western General Hospital, and held positions as visiting consultant to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital.

Subsequently he returned to full-time practice as a specialist dental surgeon in Melbourne, in his field of oral and maxillofacial surgery to pursue his specific clinical interest in dental implant treatment and this now constitutes the major part of his clinical practice, working in association with other experienced clinicians.

Dr Ferguson has published extensively in the biomedical literature, both on research and clinical subjects, with more than 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals (see list under Dr Ferguson-Publications) and continues to lecture and teach on a regular basis to different groups.

Personal

Dr Ferguson has numerous interests away from his busy professional life. Many weekends are spent at a secluded hideaway in the Yarra Valley, where he and wife Valerie have developed a beautiful garden over the last ten years. They successfully defended their property against the Black Saturday firestorm in 2009.

A self-built studio on the property allows Dr Ferguson to spend some of the winter months working on one of his hobbies, making leadlight and stained glass windows and lampshades.

His evenings are often spent reading in two of his favourite areas — the history of medicine and European literature.

Dr Ferguson has been a keen angler for most of his life. His focus has changed over time, from freshwater trout and salmon angling, to blue-water fishing for the big fishes of the open ocean. Both he and Valerie are keen sailors, and each year they charter yachts in different parts of the world. Their recent sailing adventures have included journeys around the Mediterranean, and to New Zealand’s North Island. He has a recreational pilot licence, and apart from Australia has flown in New Zealand and Russia.

Culturally he shares common interests with Valerie. They are both regular subscribers to Opera Australia, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Theatre Company. They love classical music and they each study the piano.

It goes without saying, of course, that to ensure being a well-rounded person, there is nothing Dr Ferguson enjoys as much as a glass of a nice red, especially from the Yarra Valley.
